An estimated audience of around 250,000 is expected to gather in North Liverpool for the city’s biggest ever outdoor event featuring one of the world’s leading street theatre companies, Royal De Luxe. From 20 to 22 April the company will present Sea Odyssey, a story of “how the human spirit triumphs over the Titanic tragedy”, starring the 30-foot ‘Little Girl Giant’ which has only been seen once before in the UK at the ‘Sultan’s Elephant’ event in London in 2006. The Sea Odyssey is part of the Liverpool Plan, aiming to change perceptions of the city and support North Liverpool and South Sefton’s development ambitions by showcasing potential investment opportunities. Another goal is to engender pride among local residents, inspire creativity and build community cohesion: the Little Girl Giant will also explore Everton and Anfield, reflecting the importance of sport to the city. Councillor Wendy Simon said: “These will be the first steps towards significant regeneration and investment and the event will prove to be a real catalyst for positive change, not just for the area, but for the entire city.” The Sea Odyssey team at the city council has been working with local residents, businesses, cultural organisations and registered social landlords in the area to discuss how they can make the most of the opportunities which will arise from the event. Funding will be a mixture of public and private investment: Arts Council England has given nearly £200,000.
