The first Northern Art Prize, a new award for visual artists working in any medium and living in the north of England, has been won by Nina Pope and Karen Guthrie (pictured).

The judges included artist Martin Creed, who presented the £16,500 prize. He said they were “struck by the ambitiousness of Pope and Guthrie’s vision, and by their witty, entertaining engagement with history”. Nominations for the Prize came from arts professionals across the northern regions, ranging from curators of public galleries and museums to directors of artist-led spaces and independent curators. Shortlisted artists Eric Bainbridge, Tim Brennan and Dan Holdsworth were all commended and each awarded £1,500. The Prize is supported by Logistik, Leeds City Council, Arup and Arts & Business Yorkshire.
