Artists rejected by the BP Portrait Award 2012 are being given a second chance to exhibit their work. Dazed and Refused, based at the Arch Gallery in East London, is exhibiting around 100 works by some of the 2,445 artists who failed the competition’s strict selection process. Set up by Bob Sparrow and Adam Laurence last year, the exhibition has since doubled in size. Artists were asked to contribute £10 to have their work displayed – a bargain compared to the £34 entry cost of the BP competition. They are guaranteed to have their work shown and promoted through the website, which has already attracted 400,000 hits this year and led to the sale of one work even before it was hung. The team were encouraged to run the exhibition for a second year by a short email from artist John Adams, who wrote: “Just been refused from the BP, never been happier lol.”
