Consultation on new charity structure
Consultation on an alternative way for charities to gain incorporated status without registering as a limited company is being solicited jointly by the Charity Commission and the Cabinet Office for the Third Sector. The Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) model, introduced by the Charities Act 2006 but not yet put into practice, would offer a number of advantages such as a single registration requirement, simpler reporting and filing requirements, and a single annual return. Issues for consultation include the minimum age of trustees, how much information on CIOs should be publicly available, ease of administration and accountability to beneficiaries and the public. The consultation will close on 10 December.
