Disabled children should be included alongside others in illustrations in books for young readers, according to Scope’s ‘In the Picture’ campaign. Illustrator, Quentin Blake, is among the artists supporting the campaign, which argues that children with disabilities have long been invisible in the books they read, and urges publishers to embrace diversity in a bid to challenge and eradicate disablism. In a new exhibition opening this month, a selection of original illustrations will be on display to inspire the book world to include all children on their pages. Quentin Blake said, “It is about disabled children being part of the make-up of the story, in the swimming pool or playground or wherever.”
