Appropriate staffing and training, and the use of a new ‘Get-in/Get-out Health and Safety Check Sheet’ should improve theatre get-ins, fit-ups and get-outs, according to a new Code of Conduct currently being trialled by BECTU, the media and entertainment trade union. The code, which has been produced by a joint working party of representatives from the Theatrical Management Association (TMA) and BECTU, is being tested by all TMA members and, if it proves successful, will be formally adopted by the TMA in April 2010. It addresses working hours, drugs and alcohol policies, and protective equipment. BECTU’s main concern is to improve health and safety by means of greater consistency. “The management of get-ins and get-outs has long been a complex and contentious issue … and an area of major importance because of the health and safety risks. Our hope is that this code of conduct will be the start of better practice in this key area,” BECTU supervisory official Willy Donaghy commented.
