Arts Council England's 'Let’s Create' strategy looks like it will be among the casualties of the emergency stop, says Amy Cunningham. "If we’d just grabbed it before channelling efforts into sustaining organisations that already take up much of the sector's breathing space, I think we’d find it holds just the maxim we need right now".

As so many artists and creatives have rushed to twitter, word press and so on to discuss a reimagined future of the arts sector, it’s probably worth explaining why I’m adding my voice to this particular conversation. I’m a 26-year old cis-gendered lower-middle class white woman from Leeds/Wakefield. Three years ago, I started working for Dark Horse Theatre as Young Company Manager and I am now Creative Director. Though my opinion is wholly influenced by my experience working for and running Dark Horse, it is still my opinion.

What matters to you now? Is it the same answer you’d have given 10 weeks ago?

From the way we shop to the way we educate, the general running of our lives is changed. During this time, many people have died, families are grieving and Covid-19 has made difficult lives even more of a struggle. Nevertheless, as humans, we find comfort in clinging to the positives and hope that the planet will perform a balancing act somewhere close to Sir Isaac Newton’s third law to return us to neutral.
