Whitechapel Gallery Director IWONA BLAZWICK will be stepping down in April.

During her 20 year leadership, Blazwick oversaw the gallery's expansion at the adjacent Whitechapel Library and curated several prizes for artists, including the Max Mara Art Prize for Women and NEON Curatorial Award.

She also established a gallery with displays from the Whitchapel's 120-year-old archive and founded global consortium Artists' Film International.

Whitechapel Gallery says Blazwick strengthened its commitment to showing pioneering female artists, growing its reputation as "the artist's gallery for everyone".

Blazwick said the decision to leave was emotional. She plans to continue working with the gallery as an independent curator into 2023.

"As the gallery emerges from the pandemic in a strong financial position and with programmes admired and respected around the world, now seems a good time to hand over the reins."
