Accountants have been found to be the best read profession in a survey commissioned for World Book Day. The survey found that accountants spend an average of five and a quarter hours a week reading for pleasure, while at the bottom of the reading league were members of the clergy, at two hours and forty minutes a week.

The favourite book of both accountants and clergy was The Lord of the Rings. World Book Day, the UK?s biggest annual celebration of reading, featured book signings, exhibitions, and readings at schools, libraries and bookshops across the country. Specially produced books by six leading children?s authors were made available at £1 each, and 13 million £1 book tokens were distributed to children, including for the first time pre-school children. The Day was complemented by an online festival, with web chats and specially commissioned films.
