A series of photographs ?finding a visual language for pain? has been created through a collaboration between artist Deborah Padfield and Dr Charles Pither, which won a Sciart Research Award in 2001.
Their work with ten sufferers of chronic pain at the INPUT pain unit at St Thomas?s Hospital has led to the creation of a series of images which form part of a new exhibition, funded by the Guy?s and St Thomas? Charitable Foundation, presenting different perspectives on pain. Formerly an actress specialising in physical theatre, Deborah was disabled through chronic pain following surgery. The support given to her by her family doctor encouraged her to communicate her experiences through drawing and writing, and to re-train as an artist, translating her experiences into her work.
