Scottish Youth Theatre (SYT) has unveiled plans for a purpose built home in the Merchant City area of Glasgow at the Old Sheriff Court. The building, which has been derelict for several years, was offered for development by Scottish Enterprise on the proviso that plans included a cultural element.

SYT?s plans, formed in conjunction with Persimmon Homes, include a studio theatre, rehearsal rooms, a dance studio, offices and storage areas. The market value of the entire facility has been estimated at £3.2m. Mairi Bell, Head of Tourism for Scottish Enterprise said, ?The Scottish Youth Theatre locating in the Merchant City is part of the City strategy to develop the Merchant City as a vibrant cultural destination for residents and tourists.? SYT sold its old premises at the Old Athenaeum in 1998 in order to secure its financial stability. Subject to fundraising plans, the new facility will open in 2005. Fitting out the premises will cost SYT £1.3m, of which £600,000 remains to be raised.
