Set up in 1997, the National Rural Touring Forum (NRTF) is the umbrella body for rural touring.

Its main aim is to represent the interests of rural touring schemes across the country from Cumbria to Cornwall, and there are currently around 35 schemes, working with over 1,000 local promoters in England. The rural touring sector has an annual turnover exceeding £1.5m, half of which is spent on artistic fees.

The NRTF supports its members in several ways. It offers professional development schemes and training, and the annual conference in June provides an opportunity for people to meet and do business face to face. The profile of rural touring with policy makers and funders at all levels is raised through a programme of advocacy, using good quality, up-to-date research and statistics to help make the case. The NRTF has recently commissioned François Matarasso to carry out research to assess the social significance of arts in rural areas.
