The end of a year is a good time to take stock and reflect on the previous 12 months. However traumatic the events seem, it?s worth trying to keep everything in perspective.
The future of Scottish Ballet may still unclear (p1); the new English funding structure may fail to find favour with many of its stakeholders; the Arts Council of Wales may still be unpicking the problems left by its previous management; but at least we have not had to face up to the personal tragedies suffered by New Yorkers, and we are certainly not facing the same level of financial trauma that is paralysing the US arts sector (p8). Sometimes it?s important just to count our blessings.

At ArtsProfessional we?re taking stock too, and looking back on a challenging year when we took the very difficult decision to close our former publication, ArtsBusiness, in order to extricate ourselves from our former publishers. By setting up ArtsProfessional in its place, we are now free to invest in and develop the type of magazine and range of services that are of genuine value to the sector. Already in progress is our new fully-searchable website which will enable all our subscribers to have easy access to the full set of back issues of the magazine; and which already enables us to publish recruitment vacancies on the day they are notified to us. We would be very grateful if you would complete the reader survey on p13, which will help us to better respond to your needs. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
