The Big Lottery Fund, the new organisation formed from the merger of New Opportunities Fund and the Community Fund, has launched a public consultation. The public will be asked to help determine its priorities, how it will make grants, what types of programmes it will support and how it can be most effective and efficient.

The National Network of the Arts in Health has launched an interactive Workbook CD-ROM that aims to help hospital arts co-ordinators and artists working in healthcare settings with the preparation of consultation documents, project proposals and funding applications. The workbook takes the user through a series of questions on all aspects of strategic planning and budget building for an Arts in Health project. Nottingham’s Broadway Cinema and Digital Media Centre and Intermedia, the largest film production development agency in the East Midlands, have merged to become one organisation. The merger will mean that Broadway becomes the UK’s first fully integrated media centre that focuses on all aspects of film and media production, education and exhibition.

Artists, architects and designers looking to realise new professional goals are now eligible to apply for funding of up to £40,000 from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) to “experiment or follow a passion”. Writers resident in the UK who have fewer than three professional productions to their credit are being invited to apply for the Verity Bargate Award, which offers a £3,500 prize plus a residency at Soho Theatre and Writer’s Centre.

A new initiative to showcase Scottish Theatre during the Edinburgh Festival will enable The Gateway Theatre to develop its reputation in an international context and broaden the international profile of the companies it showcases. The 2004 festival will showcase work by Catherine Wheels, Theatre Cryptic and Theatre Babel.

Arts commissioner and producer, Artangel, has launched a Positive Action Traineeship for individuals from Asian, Black or Chinese backgrounds. A forgotten work of art by John Piper is to be raffled in a fundraising initiative by Birmingham’s New Gallery and the Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings in Worcestershire, where the work was found in their basement having lain untouched for several years. The Lithograph of the Avoncroft Museum and surrounding landscape, a signed and numbered edition worth £1,500, will be the top prize, and a limit of 500 books of tickets to the Grand Draw will be issued, to give ticket-buyers a reasonable chance of winning.
