The 2,500 lantern images paraded through the stadium at the Closing Ceremony of Manchester?s Commonwealth Games and viewed by millions of people around the world, were provided by North West arts company Walk the Plank.
For over two months more than 50 artists and apprentices drawn from the both the local area and the rest of the UK had worked at a warehouse in Trafford to create the lanterns, all representing different faiths from around the world. Over 32,000 batteries were used to power the lanterns, which were constructed using several tonnes of willow sticks and reams of tissue paper.
