Following a decision on August 19 by the Board of Stratford Circus to seek voluntary liquidation (ArtsProfessional issue 57, September 8), Newham Council, which has been given interim management responsibility for the venue by liquidators PriceWaterhouseCoopers, has revealed that the venue?s public entertainments licence expired in July 2003
The Council had earlier indicated that bookings made with Stratford Circus would be honoured, but this is no longer the case. Although occasional licences have since been granted for two events, the date by which a new licence will be in force is dependent on the outcome of the operational and safety inspections now being carried out. Furthermore, Newham Council has now withdrawn its original statement relating to Stratford Circus, dated August 20, in which its Director of Culture and Community stated that Stratford Circus had ??failed to provide an achievable plan and have been trading insolvently.? In its revised statement, also dated August 20, Newham Council now says ?Contrary to earlier reports, the council wishes to make it clear that the Board of Stratford Circus sought voluntary liquidation in order to avoid trading insolvently.?
