A partnership between West Midlands Arts and the Unit for Arts and Offenders has led to the development of a training programme to prepare artists to work with vulnerable and challenging groups, both in the community and the criminal justice system.
The programme has two stages, the first aiming to equip participants to develop professional practice that is safe, appropriate and effective for a range of contexts, such as working in hostels, with mental health service users, and with young people in pupil referral units. Those who complete this course can extend their training to include contexts in the criminal justice system, including prisons, probation, youth justice and young people at risk of offending. The course will look at the practicalities, key issues, opportunities and constraints of working in these contexts, and will include a one-week placement opportunity with an arts organisation working in this field.
