Archaeological remains found on the site for a new £13m professional theatre and arts centre in Newport, South Wales, are delaying the progress of the new venue.
Contractors moved onto the riverside site in May to start building the centre, but tests at the site are now being carried out on the timbers that have been unearthed in what would be the orchestra pit, to see if they are significant. Designed by architects Austin-Smith and due to open in 2004, the riverside development will include a 500-seat theatre, a 150-seat studio theatre, recording and dance studios, workshop spaces and an art gallery.
