The Supermarket Symphony, by Barry Russell, was performed for the first time on Thursday April 10 at ASDA in Harpurhey, North Manchester.
Local people, school children and ASDA staff joined members of the BBC Philharmonic to perform the work, which was devised by the orchestra?s Education & Community Department. Participants played instruments such as pan lids, food baskets, spoons, cereal packets, trolleys, yoghurt pot shakers and tin-can cow-bells. This world premiere was part of the Philharmonic?s Pop Up Project, which includes performances in hospitals, pubs and other unexpected places.
