The Audit Commission has published a report offering a framework to help public service providers respond to their statutory duty to positively promote race equality. The report was based on a survey researching local authorities and their activities in regard to race relations.
The survey found that organisations are at different stages on what the Commission describes as the “journey to race equality”, but nearly half of the organisations surveyed had made little or no progress in engaging with local black and minority ethnic communities. The report calls for public service providers to go beyond compliance and to attempt to deliver the spirit of the legislation and to clarify to all staff the benefits of investing in race equality work.
