Following its success in negotiating a new deal for film actors, theatre union Equity?s sights are set on England?s regional theatre plan.
They argue that a substantial amount of the extra £25m that comes on stream from April 2003 should find its way into the pockets of actors and stage management staff, who subsidise theatres? work by accepting low pay, inadequate allowances and a lack of support systems such as pension payments. They are also pressing for the return to former levels of middle-range salaries being paid to actors. The recent film deal, which gives film and TV performers a share in 2-3% of revenue on films made in the UK, is a major break-through. Although US TV was not included, the boost to earnings for film actors puts Equity?s deal second only to the Screen Actors? Guild.
