A number of major London-based arts organisations whose future grants from the Association of London Government (ALG) were under threat, have been reprieved following a climb-down by the ALG Grants Committee (see ArtsProfessional issue 43, February 10, p1-2).
Organisations including Clean Break Theatre Company, Oval House and Polka Theatre for Children have now received confirmation that their ALG funding will be sustained, contrary to recommendations made earlier this year that finance previously used to support the arts should be re-directed towards sport and other activities. Other arts organisations, however, have not been so lucky. Sadler?s Wells? funding still faces the axe, and decisions have been deferred for a second time in three months about Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, Hoxton Hall, the London Bubble Theatre, the Young Vic Theatre Company and Wimbledon Theatre. Outreach programmes at these organisations could be under threat if their grants are cut. The ALG grant has covered a third of core costs for the Young Vic?s Teaching Participation and Research (TPR) projects, including a Funded Ticket Scheme which enables schools and community groups to come to the theatre for free.
