Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre, on the isle of North Uist, has been named as the winner of the BURA Charitable Trust's 2001 award for Best Practice in Community Regeneration.
North Uist has a population of just 1,800 inhabitants, yet the Centre's annual visitor figures stand at around 28,000. The Centre offers opportunities for local artists and craftsmakers to create, display and sell their work, but also brings acclaimed international exhibitions to the community. Making the award, the judging panel felt that Taigh Chearsabhagh provides a model for vibrant, creative and sustainable community-based projects, and strikes the balance of supporting and engaging indigenous and visiting populations, as well as providing a focus for a dispersed community.
