Women in Music, the national membership organisation which exists to raise awareness of, and redress the imbalance between the sexes in music, has named the six women composers who will receive funding through the its commissioning fund for initiatives which create new music.
The projects span experimental, church and community music, as well as works which bring together circus performers with an orchestra, and music with literature. Launched last year, the Women in Music Commissioning Fund has made available £33,000 for projects which will raise the profile of women?s musical talent and act as a catalyst for lasting change in the music business. The future of both the Fund and Women in Music, however, is in doubt following a decision by the Arts Council of England to cease revenue funding for the organisation.
