The Arts Council of Wales ?Night Out? scheme is making £20,000 available to help provide better access to the arts in the most disadvantaged wards in Wales.
Since 1980 the scheme has given financial support to local communities staging professional performances in local buildings. This year 187 organisations are using the scheme to host 370 shows involving 143 performing groups from across the UK, including puppeteers, pianists, dancers, musicians, drama companies and more. Organising groups include mother and toddler groups, youth clubs, remote rural village halls, back-rooms of pubs, churches, and even community-staffed arts centres. Special funding for Communities First Areas will now mean that only £150, instead of the standard £265, will be charged to host a performance. Further arrangements with County Councils in Wales will also help insulate groups from losing money when they host events. Community Touring manager John Prior said ?Over the years rising prices have made it increasingly difficult for our local authority partners, and we are glad to be able to assist them.? t: 029 2037 6540; w: http://www.nightout.org.uk
