This week sees the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) formally open its new education centre and performing arts venue based in a Grade 1 listed building and former church in the City of London, close to the Barbican where it is the resident orchestra.
The £18m conversion of St Luke?s church (pictured) has created a home for the LSO?s music education and community programme, LSO Discovery, and will also provide rehearsal and recording facilities. The latest multimedia technology will enable its interactive education and community projects to be extended across the UK and around the world. The development of the new facility has been supported by both arts and heritage Lottery funds, and benefited from a £1m award by the Jerwood Foundation as well as £3.5m from corporate partner UBS.
