We all recognise that, for the popular press at least, conflict in the arts makes better copy than consensus. However I was disappointed that ArtsProfessional (Issue 36, October 21) chose to represent the Arts Council of Wales? statement in support of a National Gallery of Contemporary Art in Wales as somehow being in opposition to the proposals by the National Museums & Galleries of Wales (NMGW).

To clarify our position; ACW supports the NMGW proposals but is also actively supporting the need for a national gallery which is primarily concerned with a changing programme of exhibitions of contemporary art from Wales within an international context.

ACW is in agreement with the statement from Michael Toobey of NMGW with which you closed the article: ?This is a seriously under-funded sector where the debate should be about additionality not about choosing between alternatives. Scotland has recognised the importance of supporting a National Gallery and a National Museum as well as high quality permanent spaces for contemporary art and a similar model must surely be a priority for Wales.?

As an organisation committed to supporting creativity in Wales, the Arts Council of Wales feels there is an incontrovertible need for Wales to have a permanent venue where Welsh artists can display their work in an international context, as well as initiatives that provide greater access to art across Wales.
