Fundraising is about relationships, the money is merely one outcome of that

It is an ongoing, long-term process -not about quick hits

It is also about realising unexpected opportunities, so be ready

Grant givers have to give away money. It 's their job;they are not doing you a favour. You are helping them to be successful

Read the funding criteria and write the application so that it meets these criteria. Use and repeat their exact words if necessary

Be realistic and be specific. e.g. if you say you are offering community benefit, specifically say how and where and who will benefit

Ask to meet with the fund-giver before you submit an application. Talk to them about your project, listen for the response and amend your bid accordingly

If you are successful, write and thank the person who actually made the decision, then write later and tell them what benefits the money has brought

If you are unsuccessful, always ask for feedback Plymouth Arts Centre:a core client of Plymouth City Council
