A £10m purpose-built cultural centre opens this week, providing a focal point in the £110m redevelopment of the Ropewalks district of Liverpool.
The centre will provide a home to FACT, the commissioning and presenting agency for film, video and new media art, and will also house the Moving Image Touring & Exhibition Service. A number of artworks either form part of the building, such as the zinc-panelled exterior and its interactive lighting system, or are a response to it, such as the Singh Twins? lightbox portraits. Two galleries will provide a space for temporary exhibitions of film, video and new media; three cinemas will screen arthouse and independent film, run by operator City Screen; and a programme of digital arts projects will take place in the Media Lounge, a curated space for Internet and media art.
