Freedom of speech, freedom to imagine the intimate, freedom to configure space and freedom to build equity are all issues that Black and Asian visual artists face in the reality of their practice. In a landmark event to mark the culmination of the decibel visual arts platform, artists, architects, cultural thinkers and pioneers are coming together to create the concept of ?A Free State?.
On March 18?19, at the British Museum, speakers including David Adjaye, Kasi Lemmons, Ekow Eshun, Gary Younge, Lola Young and film-makers Melvin and Mario van Peebles will lead discussions which will culminate in the conceptual creation of a new Free State, within which culturally diverse artists can practice their work. A leap beyond the standard conference, debate will be inspired by keynote speakers and then explored in a series of think-tanks or ?Talking Circles?. Aimed at artists, curators, administrators, academics and anyone interested in the future definition of cultural practice, this will be an opportunity to listen, learn and contribute.
