A new network of leading British conservatoires has been formed in an attempt to maintain and enhance the quality, range and accessibility of advanced professional training for musicians in the UK. Conservatoires UK (CUK) is committed to widening access to music education, and with this in mind has established the Conservatoires UK Admissions System (CUKAS), which will be operated by UCAS and will come into effect next year.
The organisation will be working with the Department for Education and Skills, Music Education Council, Higher Education Funding Council England, Teacher Training Agency, Federation of Music Services, and other parties, to develop new career paths in music education, and the conservatoire curriculum will be kept constantly under review to ensure that it meets changing employment patterns in the music profession. The members of CUK are Birmingham Conservatoire, Leeds College of Music, Royal College of Music, Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and Trinity College of Music.
