Following the success of Operatunity and Musicality, Channel 4 is launching a nationwide talent search with the aim of presenting a new play in the West End next year. The search for a new British playwright will be made into a four-part television series, The Play?s the Thing, which will chart the selection process, dramaturgy and, ultimately, the casting and production of the winning script.
Producer, Sonia Friedman, who is leading the search said, ?I find it frustrating that so few new plays premiere in the West End. The reason why is obvious: the financial risks are too high and the pressure to succeed is too intense. Therefore I am excited by the prospect of hunting for that elusive new play? and seeing if it is possible for the play to go on to enjoy critical and financial success.?
