News – Globe prepares for citizenship tour

A tour specifically targeting faith-based schools is set to take a production of Othello to 63 schools including Muslim, Catholic and Church of England single-faith schools. The tour, planned by the Education Department of Shakespeare?s Globe Theatre, follows a year-long exploration of Shakespeare and Islam at the Globe in 2004.
It will include workshops aiming to tackle the issues of justice, judgement and forgiveness raised by the play. Earlier this month David Bell, The Chief Inspector of Schools, criticised faith-based schools as failing to teach citizenship adequately. He said, ?I worry that many young people are being educated in faith-based schools, with little appreciation of their wider responsibilities and obligations to British society.?
