News – Not never on a Sunday?
Technicians? union BECTU is balloting its members on proposals to implement a new standard West End contract that could open the door to regular Sunday performances. The deal, which has been hammered out by the union and the Society of London Theatres (SOLT), includes a pay increase of 5.5%, double time on Sundays, and improvements in maternity and paternity entitlements.
Currently, London theatres have had to make one-off local agreements with BECTU in order to stage performances on Sundays. The new deal would bring technicians in line with musicians and actors whose unions have general agreements permitting Sunday working. Ballot papers had to be reissued earlier this month because of postal problems. Voting will close in early February with union leaders confident the deal will be agreed.
