News – Immediate inquiry
Parliament?s Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee is launching an inquiry into ?the nature and adequacy of public support for theatre in Britain.? The inquiry is expected to focus on the role of Arts Council England and the relationship between the commercial and subsidised theatre sectors.
Other areas likely to be covered include the maintenance of theatre buildings and the wider economic impact of theatre. The first meeting of the committee has not yet been scheduled but a report is expected by the summer. However, concerns have been raised about the limited time available for submissions from interested parties in advance of the inquiry, which was announced on December 20. The deadline for submissions passed on January 14.
