Film clubs, community groups and mobile film exhibitors across the UK are to receive grants of up to of £5,000 from the Digital Fund for Non-Theatrical Exhibition, to help them buy high quality DVD-based digital equipment.
Seven larger awards have been made to Regional Screen Agencies and other film-related organisations, including the British Federation of Film Societies, to purchase multiple sets of equipment which they will lease out or tour to community groups within their regions. In total, £500,000 worth of Lottery grants will purchase digital players, projectors, sound systems and related equipment. Although last year UK film-goers made 167m visits to the cinema, large areas of the country, especially very rural locations, still have little, if any, convenient access to a cinema.
