The first ever ?World Culture Open? (WCO) is taking place in New York and North and South Korea throughout September, drawing together artists from around the world. During the event, awards of $100,000 each will be made to groups and individuals for outstanding achievements in creative arts, holistic wellbeing and humanitarian service.
Among the nominees are the Boys Choir of Harlem, USA, Orcamento Participativo from Brazil, and the Interactive Resource Centre of Pakistan which combines Forum Theatre with indigenous Pakistani theatre traditions to promote social and economic justice. The WCO was the brainchild of three Koreans, Dr Seok Hyun Hong, a newspaper publisher, Jang Hong Koh, a holistic martial arts grand master and Kiyul Chung, a United Methodist minister. It was established as a cultural ?Olympics? but was denied the use of that title by the International Olympic Committee.
