From David Staples, Managing Director, Theatre Projects
Heather Newill offered good advice to arts managers and administrators planning and managing capital projects (ArtsProfessional issue 78, July 12). A major capital project is indeed a completely different experience for most managers from their regular task of running a theatre, orchestra or other arts organisation. However, the article did not stress sufficiently the need to take appropriate advice from consultants with deep and relevant experience of capital building projects. I appreciate the word ?consultant? has become tarnished in recent years, in part as a result of many inexperienced people rushing in to exploit the Lottery jackpot; but there are many experienced and skilled consultants in this country who have successfully brought to fruition theatres, museums and galleries, not only in the UK but around the world. A good consultant is able to support, educate and guide the board and the management of a client organisation.
