StoryQuest 2004, a festival of storytelling aimed at children aged from 7 to 14 years, will take place in venues around the country this autumn.

Designed and run by the Hay Festival, the project is an Arts and Kids initiative, and aims to encourage children’s reading and writing at the beginning of their secondary education. StoryQuest 2004 will have an interactive website featuring content about and by popular children’s authors and will provide classroom materials and opportunities to sign up for author-led events. Research commissioned to coincide with the launch of the festival has found, unsurprisingly, that over half of all children who responded to the survey would choose one of the Harry Potter novels as their favourite book. One in five of the children questioned were unable to name a favourite book.
