The governing documents and accounts of 400 charities in England and Wales are now available online as part of a major initiative by the Charity Commission to promote greater openness and accountability among charitable organisations. Over the next two years the Commission also aims to enable charities to file their annual returns online and to permit new organisations to register as charities over the Internet.
In April 2005, GuideStar UK will launch a complementary online charity information service to enable users to search and manipulate the narrative and financial data contained in the reports and accounts. Chief Charity Commissioner John Stoker said ?Our quest to make information available on all charities at the click of a button should give a better understanding of the work of charities and help the public and funders make more informed decisions about which charities to support.?
