The Paul Hamlyn Foundation has launched Musical Futures, a £2m project to develop a tool-kit that will help local education authorities and schools to overcome teenagers? barriers to music education.
Despite widespread participation in unsupervised music activities, only 8% of secondary school children in Britain take part in individual music tuition. Musical Futures will comprise three pathfinder projects, in Leeds, Nottingham and Hertfordshire, which will develop initiatives designed to engage with children?s interests and investigate methods of bringing informal learning techniques into the classroom.
