Arts & Business (A&B) has launched a programme of activities aimed at raising the level of individual giving to the arts by £140m each year, in an attempt to match the rate of donations in the USA.
Recent figures in the UK reveal that whilst 3.4% of philanthropic giving went to the arts, during the equivalent period in the US, 5.7% of donations were made to arts organisations. A&B?s new programme is known as the ?Maecenas initiative?, named after a Roman patron of the arts, and will pilot new models for encouraging arts philanthropy. Training seminars will be offered for small and mid-scale arts organisations attempting to increase their individual giving income. Individual giving to the arts in the UK, which totalled just over £236m in 2001/2002, is still more than double that of business support.
