Scottish Ballet has announced that, following a two-year search for premises and considering almost 200 sites across Glasgow, it is hoping to move to Tramway, the former Tram Depot which first opened for arts activity in 1988.
The building, located in Pollokshields, has been identified as key to the regeneration of the area. Scottish Ballet’s proposals, which will require funding from Scottish Arts Council, include the development of a derelict wing of the building but would also see the conversion of exhibition space into rehearsal rooms. This has unleashed a storm of protest from the visual arts community, which has been vociferous in its objections. Underlining its support for the visual arts, in which it invests £300,000 a year, the City Council has indicated that, despite the loss of the exhibition space, financial support would remain. It has neither encouraged nor discouraged Scottish Ballet in its bid, but stated that it would be foolish to disregard the potential for external investment.
