e: j.elliman@itc-arts.org

What does your organisation do?

ITC supports over 400 performing arts organisations ? providing management, legal and financial advice, training, publications, networking events, lobbying and advocacy.

What does your job involve?

? Advising on legal issues particularly employment problems, contracts, intellectual property and company structure
? Negotiating ITC?s Collective Agreements with Equity & the Writers Guild
? Writing helpsheets and articles on legal and industrial relations issues
? Training on legal issues affecting the industry
? Helping Members with Company Incorporation, Charitable Status and Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure applications.

Who did you previously work for?

? Equity: Set up Equity?s Job Information Service
? Freelance: For a wide range of arts organisations and funders
? TMA & SOLT: Very varied work included union negotiations, publications and organising TMA?s first international conference.

What do you enjoy most about your present post?

The companies I work for (and their work), the people I work with, providing practical support for practitioners in an industry that is important to me.

What do you find most difficult in your present post?

? Giving advice when people call me after they have taken an action, rather than before.
? Not having enough time to consider every problem in the depth it deserves.

What is your career ambition?

To learn more about law and to continue to use this knowledge to help the performing arts.

Who has influenced your career to date the most and why?

My parents for making theatre a key part of my upbringing, my sister for suggesting I study law and (equally) almost everyone I have worked for.

If you could have done any job, what would it be?

Being a globe-trotting performing arts and restaurant reviewer rather appeals!

Your three wishes for the future of the arts?

? Companies having the courage (and money) to continue to experiment and challenge
? More recognition for companies working with underprivileged and disabled people and those at risk
? No barriers to international exchange of work and artists (not all globalisation is bad).
