Watercolours by Gauguin, van Gogh and Picasso were stolen from the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester last week.
Police believe that the thieves were experts, who subsequently realised that the works were too famous to be saleable. Following an anonymous telephone call, the paintings were found rolled into a cardboard tube outside a nearby public toilet. Although they suffered damage, repairs are possible and they will be back on display within two weeks.
