The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry has received a grant of £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for its ?Discovering the Mysteries? project.

The project comprises ?The Mysteries 2003?, a new play entitled ?The Devil at Coventry?, exhibitions, pre-performance talks, a new interactive website and a participatory schools and community project called ?Amazing Myths?. The Belgrade undertakes a re-working of the Mysteries every three years, based on a fragment of the original Coventry Mystery play, ?The Pageant of the Shearmen and Taylors?. This year?s production is a collaboration with the award-winning Irish theatre company Macnas, whose CV includes the Millennium New Year celebrations in Times Square, New York. The performance involves professional actors and 200 people from communities in the Coventry area and in Galway. Rehearsals have already begun in both Coventry and Ireland with directors Richard Hayhow and Mikel Murfi. The first performances will take place in Galway in July, while in Coventry a series of events will run from June, culminating in the Mysteries in August.
