A second round of cross-border touring awards, which were first introduced in May last year, are to create new opportunities for major performing arts companies to present work across their national borders.

A total of over £800,000 ? £600,000 from Arts Council England and the rest from the Scottish Arts Council ? will permit Birmingham Royal Ballet, Northern Ballet, Opera North, the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Scottish Ballet and Scottish Opera to tour for an extra 12 weeks in total. The third funding round, which will be announced next year, will for the first time be supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, though the Arts Council of Wales, which helped to develop the scheme, has no plans at present to dedicate funding to support more work.
