Five years after it was awarded £12.4m of Lottery funding, Shakespeare?s Globe has been praised in an independent review carried out on behalf of Arts Council England for fulfilling all of its original projections, and exceeding them in most areas.
Fifteen Lottery-funded arts projects were evaluated in June 2002, including the Royal Opera House, the Royal National Theatre and Sadler?s Wells. Performance was measured in terms of artistic and educational outputs, financial viability and fitness for purpose of the buildings. Shakespeare?s Globe was described as ?remarkable? for its achievements in the absence of any public subsidy. Its notable successes include audience figures at an average of 87% capacity, its ?groundling? tickets scheme which enables 115,000 theatregoers a year to see a play for £5, and its education activities which reach 57,000 students every year, 22,000 more than originally planned.
