A new prize worth £100,000 to its winner is to be funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
The annual Gulbenkian Prize will replace the ?Museum of the Year? title and aims is to reward "the most innovative and inspiring idea" in the museums and galleries sector. Organisations both large and small are encouraged to enter for the prize, and exhibitions, new galleries, public programmes and other initiatives are all eligible. Entrants will need a ?genuine and demonstrable effect on public perceptions of museums and galleries and enhance appreciation of their role? and gauging public enthusiasm for nominated projects will be a key part of the judging process. The prize money is to be invested in a project or activity at the winning museum or gallery that will benefit visitors. A shortlist will be announced in spring 2003 and the first prize presented during Museums and Galleries Month in May. Details can be found at
