Cultural Diversity Forums for African, Asian and Chinese arts have been launched in the north east of England by Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell MP when she visited Newcastle for a preview of the BALTIC and a visit to a cancer treatment centre where the arts are being used in patient therapy
. The primary aim of the new Forums is to help minority ethnic artists and arts organisations increase their community involvement, and raise the profile of black arts within the arts mainstream. Supported by Northern Arts they will help Black and minority ethnic artists and arts organisations in the region to collaborate with other community and mainstream groups and consolidate their activities through skills exchange, placements and study visits between similar organisations operating in regions where good practices are established.
